Printer Not Working – What to Try First
Follow these steps before submitting a support ticket.
Step 1 – Check the printer is on and ready
Look at the printer's control panel. The status light should be solid green or blue. If it's flashing, refer to the printer's display for an error message (e.g. Paper jam, Out of paper, Low toner).
Step 2 – Check your print queue
On Windows: click the Start menu → Devices and Printers → right-click your printer → See what's printing. If there are stuck jobs, right-click each one and select Cancel, then try printing again.
Step 3 – Check the correct printer is selected
When you print, make sure the printer shown in the print dialog matches the physical printer you want to use. If your default printer has changed, select the correct one from the dropdown.
Step 4 – Restart the printer
Turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on. Wait for it to fully initialise before trying to print again.
Step 5 – Restart the Print Spooler service (Windows)
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, press Enter - Scroll to Print Spooler
- Right-click → Restart
- Try printing again
